NORTH OSSETIAN LEGISLATURE ABOLISHES POST OF PRESIDENT

The parliament of the Republic of North Ossetia unanimously approved on 21 May in the third and final reading amendments to the republic\'s constitution that downgrade the title of its leader from president to head of the republic. Opening the debate, parliament speaker Teimuraz Mamsurov argued that Russia should have just one president, and that to have dozens of presidents in a single state does not make legal or political sense. The amendments will take effect as of 1 January 2006, just weeks before incumbent President Aleksandr Dzasokhov\'s second term expires.Visit also
