NAZARBAYEV CALLS FOR SINGLE GLOBAL CURRENCY

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev is neither shy about his vision of turning Kazakhstan into one of the world’s 50 most competitive countries, nor reserved in his ambitions ranging from the integration of Central Asia to the recent call for a single global currency to deal with the financial crisis. As the leaders of the G-20 countries prepare for a financial summit on April 2 in London, Nazarbaev has been advancing his proposal to deal with the global recession, and with it, his domestic and international clout.
“We must switch to a new global currency system, which will be based on a single global monetary unit,”- Nazarbayev underlined on March 10 at the congress of the Eurasian Universities Association, adding that Kazakhstan presented to the world with view of the solution.
FINANCIAL CRISIS AFFECTS UZBEK LABOR MARKET

Over the last few years, early spring used to be the height of the labor migration season in Central Asia. This year is no different in Uzbekistan, although the financial crisis has undoubtedly affected the employment opportunities of many who used to earn their living abroad. As the labor migrants constitute the most vulnerable group of workers, their value on the labor market has increasingly dropped during the first few months of the crisis.
RUSSIA LOSING HEARTS AND MINDS IN TAJIKISTAN

On 24 February, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met with Tajikistan’s Emomali Rahmon to rebuild relations that recently deteriorated to their worst level in a decade. Putting aside their disagreements over water and energy issues in Central Asia, the two leaders went fishing and hunting at Medvedev’s residence in Zavidovo. Although there was almost no public information about the outcomes of the meeting, analysts suggest that it has reinforced Moscow’s control over Dushanbe.
NATO CONSIDERS ALTERNATIVE SUPPLY ROUTES FOR AFGHANISTAN

Kyrgyzstan's decision on February 20 to shut down the Manas airbase left the NATO coalition scrambling to find alternative routes to deliver supplies and fuel to its forces in Afghanistan. The closure of the airbase—scheduled for late August 2009— comes at a critical point in NATO’s operations in Afghanistan. In February, President Obama pledged to boost the level of the U.
