GEORGIAN, RUSSIAN PRESIDENTS BEGIN TALKS IN SOCHI

Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze traveled to Sochi on 6 March and held a first round of talks there that evening with Russian President Putin. Georgian officials said the talks would focus on the Abkhaz conflict, the situation in Georgia\'s Pankisi Gorge, the future of the two Russian military bases in Georgia, and the framework agreement between the two countries that is currently under discussion. A second meeting between the two presidents is scheduled on 7 March.

Also on 7 March, an Abkhaz delegation headed by Prime Minister Gennadii Gagulia arrived in Sochi, and Gagulia met \"briefly\" with Putin. Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Kakha Sikharulidze denied on 4 March that either Gagulia or Abkhaz President Vladislav Ardzinba would attend the Putin-Shevardnadze talks. (Caucasus Press)
