GEORGIAN PRESIDENT SACKS FINANCE, TAX MINISTERS

Shevardnadze dismissed Tax Minister Levan Dzneladze and Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli on 2 May after Georgia failed to meet its budget targets either for the first quarter of 2002 or in April. The Georgian parliament will now propose amalgamating the two ministries, to be headed by Anti-Corruption Council Chairman Mirian Gogiashvili. However, parliament Budget Committee head Roman Gotsiridze said on 2 May that the April budget shortfall was not the result of a shortfall in tax revenues, but of the Customs Department\'s failure to crack down on the smuggling of cigarettes and gasoline.Visit also
