NO CONSCRIPTS TO SERVE IN CHECHNYA FROM 2005 - GENERAL STAFF

Conscripts will not serve in Chechnya starting from 2005. \"In accordance with the federal target program, the 42nd motorized division and the 46th division of the Interior Ministry\'s Interior Troops will be staffed with contract servicemen by the end of 2004. We are hoping that there will be no conscripts in Chechnya beginning from 2005,\" Colonel General Vasily Smirnov, the head of the main organizational mobilization department of the Russian General Staff, told reporters in Moscow on Tuesday.

The military commissariats in Chechnya will recruit conscripts as usual, Smirnov said. \"Of course, there are restrictions on the Chechen military commissariats for objective reasons. However, conscription will be conducted this spring by all military commissariats in Chechnya,\" he said. (Interfax)
