Prosecutor-General Beknazarov has said that his office is preparing a request for parliament to strip former President Askar Akaev of immunity from prosecution, RFE/RL\'s Kyrgyz Service reported on 18 August. Beknazarov said that two-thirds of the legislature will need to approve the request in order to clear the way for the prosecution of the ex-president, who is currently residing in Russia, for crimes allegedly committed during his time in office.
