CANADIAN OIL COMPANY FACES $55 MILLION JUDGMENT IN KAZAKHSTAN

PetroKazakhstan, a Canadian-registered company that extracts oil in Kazakhstan, announced on 14 July that a Kazakh court has rendered a $55.4 million judgment against it for violations of antimonopoly legislation. The company said it has not yet received a written copy the court ruling, but noted that it plans to appeal.

Wilf Gobert, a Calgary-based energy analyst, told Canadian Press that PetroKazakhstan may still be able to salvage the situation. \"The company usually ends up taking these things to the Supreme Court,\" he said. \"And ultimately they end up having the charges thrown out or substantially reduced.\" (Reuters)
