The international human rights watchdog Amnesty International (AI) has released a new 38-page report chronicling how the ongoing war in Chechnya has negatively affected the human rights situation in Ingushetia. The report notes the disappearance of \"dozens\" of people in Ingushetia this year, including that of a senior prosecutor\'s office official who sought to alert the Russian government to that trend, and the presence in Ingushetia of an estimated 50,000 displaced persons from Chechnya. The report accuses the federal and republican authorities of lacking the will to investigate human rights abuses and bring those responsible to justice.

Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov has said he disagrees with reports by foreign media alleging that the country infringes upon the rights of ethnic minorities. \"Some newspapers say that the Russians are being oppressed here, but we know well that not a single Russian is oppressed in Turkmenistan. Envy stands behind all this,\" Niyazov said at a meeting with the chiefs of law enforcement and military agencies, excerpts of which were broadcast by Turkmen television on Monday evening.

Several rebel groups attacked the building of Ingushetia\'s Ministry of Internal Affairs, frontier posts in Nazran, the town of Sleptsovsk and Karabulak village late Monday night, June 21. It is presumed they entered Ingushetia from the neighboring republics: Chechnya and North Osetiya. Afterwards, they split into groups and entered Nazran, Karabulak and Sleptsovsk.
