BAGRAM -- More than 1,000 Afghans, some throwing stones, tried to break down an outer gate at the main US base yesterday while demanding the release of eight detained villagers; Afghan troops fired warning shots and used clubs to beat the crowd back. US troops also fired into the air. Andranik Markarian began a two-day visit to Georgia on 24 July by undertaking with his Georgian counterpart Zurab Noghaideli a tour of the predominantly Armenian-populated region of Djavakheti in southern Georgia, Georgian agencies and RFE/RL\'s Armenian Service reported on 25 July. The two prime ministers met with local Armenians in several villages and in the regional center of Akhalkalaki.
