President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev sent a message of congratulations to the Jewish community of Azerbaijan whereby the head of state congratulated them on the Jewish New year- Roshashana. President Aliyev extended his best wishes and happiness to the country’s Jews, noting that in Azerbaijan, all necessary democratic-legal bases have been created for preservation of the language and culture of all the minorities, national customs and traditions, for ensuring their human rights and freedoms. As all the peoples of the Republic, the Jewish community is also the active participator of the ongoing democratic processes in the country, the letter underlines.

Georgia is unanimously supporting Kazakhstan in holding the chair of the OSCE in 2009, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili stated at the press conference in Tbilisi. Kazakhstan’s participation in the solving international problems may play a decisive role, the Head of Georgia stressed. I am confident that Kazakhstan’s holding chair of the OSCE is of great importance for us and for the whole region as well.

NATO countries are planning to intensify the use of the air base at Manas airport near Bishkek for the anti-terrorist operation, Special Representative of the NATO Secretary General for Central Asia and the Caucasus Robert Simmons has said. He told a Monday news conference in Bishkek that the use of the air base will be increased. He said NATO and the United States are determined to continue their military presence in Afghanistan until the complete restoration of peace there.

EU BANS ARMS SALES TO UZBEKISTAN

The EU has approved an arms embargo on Uzbekistan after the violent suppression of anti-government protests in the city of Andijan in May. It has also decided to deny visas to top Uzbek officials. However, the bloc has yet to announce who exactly will be affected by the travel ban.
