CHECHNYA ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL RESULTS OF PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS

The Chechen Elections Commission has announced the final official results of parliamentary elections in the North Caucasus republic, Elections Commission Chairman Ismail Baikhanov told Interfax. The commission endorsed the final vote-count records at a session on Saturday. The United Russia party has won a majority of seats in the two-house Chechen parliament and will have 24 seats in the People\'s Assembly (the lower chamber) and nine in the Council of the Republic (the upper chamber).UZBEKS JAIL 25 ANDIJAN SUSPECTS

Twenty-five men have received sentences of up to 22 years in jail in Uzbekistan in connection with a bloody uprising in the eastern town of Andijan in May. The men were sentenced after two separate trials held behind closed doors in undisclosed locations. Georgian police units have attempted to gain control of a road near the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali, South Ossetian envoy to Moscow Dmitry Medoyev said. \"Four groups of Georgian riot police, about 50 in total, attempted to seize control of a bypass road outside Tskhinvali.
