The Georgian president Edward Shewardnadze stated in his traditional Monday radio interview that information that the Abkhaz fighters entered Georgian controlled Kodori gorge corresponds reality. The president’s Representative in Kodori gorge informed that up to 100 Russian soldiers and Abkhaz fighters entered the upper Kodori, violating the agreement on demilitarization of the Kodori gorge. Kvitsiani told the reporters today that Georgian helicopters was fired by Russian soldiers on August 12, causing no casualties.

The Azeri president Heidar Aliyev visited on August 11 Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic an (exclave in northwest of Azerbaijan) and have a number of official and non-official meetings. This visit was held three days prior to the meeting of the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan who will meet August 14 along the border of two states in Sadarak district of the republic of Nakhichevan to try to achieve a peaceful settlement to the Nagornyy Karabakh conflict. During the meeting with the population of exclave the Azeri president said "I do not want war, I want to resolve the Karabakh problem by peaceful means, through talks.

According to preliminary returns, Arkadii Ghukasian was re-elected on 11 August for a second term as president of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic with 89 percent of the vote, RFE/RL's Armenian Service reported. His closest challenger, former parliament speaker Artur Tovmasian, polled 7.7 percent, Christian-Democratic Party Chairman Albert Ghazarian 2.

Georgian officials claimed on 11 August that some 100-120 Russian and Abkhaz servicemen illegally crossed the Russian-Georgian border earlier that day via the Marukhi Pass from Karachaevo-Cherkessia into Abkhazia and are building fortifications 35-40 kilometers from the closest Georgian settlement. The Atsgara River valley runs southeast from Marukhi into the Kodori Gorge. (Caucasus Press).
