Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday defended his country\'s joint appeal with France and Germany for efforts to disarm Iraq peacefully and avoid war. \"We have not done this to build an axis or a bloc. Russia\'s second-largest oil company Lukoil said Monday that it will take part in tenders this year to develop oil and natural gas projects in Kazakhstan\'s sector of the Caspian Sea. Lukoil\'s president Vagit Alekperov met Kazakhstan\'s President Nursultan Nazarbayev in Kazakhstan Monday and discussed creating a joint venture with the country\'s state oil and gas company KazMunayGaz to work on projects in the Caspian, Lukoil said in a statement. \"We have every reason to expect long-term and effective cooperation with the Republic of Kazakhstan in the oil and gas industry,\" Alekperov said, according to the statement.OVER 2,000 RUSSIANS WANT TO GO TO IRAQ TO SUPPORT ITS PEOPLE - IRAQI AMBASSADOR

Iraqi Ambassador to Russia Abbas Halaf said that 2,500 Russian citizens have filed official applications to go to Iraq to support its people in the event of war. \'I have already forwarded this list of 2,500 people to Baghdad, and I will issue visas to these people as soon as I get approval from the Iraqi authorities,\" Halaf told a news conference in Moscow on Friday. \"If such permission is obtained, these Russian citizens will be in Iraq on February 15 to take part in a peace rally,\" he said.ARMENIA BECOMES WTO MEMBER

The decision to accept Armenia to the World Trade Organization, approved by the WTO General Council in December 2002, came into force this week, the Armenian trade and economy ministry told Interfax. Armenia does not have any commitments to bring its legislation in line with WTO regulations and it completely meets international standards, the ministry said. The Armenian government negotiated the temporary preservation of government subsidies for agriculture.Visit also
