The Kazakh parliament passed constitutional amendments in the second reading on Friday to toughen the country\'s electoral legislation. The bill will now be submitted to the president for signing. The amendments ban candidates or political parties running in the elections from organizing any rallies, marches or demonstration during the period between the end of the canvassing campaign and the official publication of the election results.

KYRGYZ MPs HEAR AKAYEV FAREWELL

Mr Akayev\'s address was shown on national TV. Kyrgyzstan\'s parliament has heard a taped resignation speech by ousted President Askar Akayev. Mr Akayev said he had intended to step down after October elections anyway, and that his last order as Kyrgyzstan\'s leader for 15 years was \"not to shoot\".

\'NO SURVIVORS\' IN US AFGHAN CRASH

A US Chinook helicopter has crashed in south-eastern Afghanistan killing 16 people, at least four of them American crew, officials have said. The CH-47 helicopter went down in bad weather in the province of Ghazni, a US military statement confirmed. The statement said there appeared to be no survivors, and two remained missing.

Prominent Kyrgyz politician Felix Kulov said he is opposed to pressing charges against the country\'s ousted President Askar Akayev. \"I will do everything in my power to help Askar Akayev avoid going on trial,\" Kulov said at a Supreme Court session on Wednesday. The Supreme Court is hearing Kulov\'s appeal against charges previously brought against him by the prosecutor\'s office.
