NAKHICHEVAN POLICE TARGET INDEPENDENT LAWYER

The Supreme Court of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic has rejected an appeal by lawyer Elman Calilov against the 15-day administrative arrest imposed upon him on 24 April. Calilov was preparing a documentary film on corruption in Azerbaijan from 1969-82, when Heidar Aliyev headed the Communist Party of Azerbaijan, and on the circumstances surrounding Aliyev\'s return to power in 1993. Police have confiscated the script and the source materials on which it was based.

Calilov has since been charged with systematic embezzlement and with resisting arrest, his lawyer Telman Novruzade told Turan. (Turan)
