Independent Azerbaijani journalists and opposition politicians reacted with consternation to the announcement that parliament deputy Ismail Omarov has been appointed to head the new public television broadcaster. In his previous post as editor in chief of political programs for Azerbaijani State Television, Omarov repeatedly engaged in harsh criticism of the political opposition. Azer Hesret, who heads a confederation of organizations representing Azerbaijani journalists, said the choice of Omarov demonstrates the Azerbaijani authorities\' contempt for the views of international organizations. He said Azerbaijani journalists plan to campaign for a public vote of no confidence in Omarov. Omarov was quoted on 18 April by the opposition daily \"Yeni Musavat\" as saying that he will offer air time to opposition politicians.(Turan)
