Militants have killed the head of a district administration and three police officers in two attacks in southern Afghanistan, officials say. The head of Shah Wali Kot district in Kandahar province, Ayatullah Popal, and two security officers are said to have died in a bomb attack. Three other policemen were injured in the attack, officials say.

At least one police officer was killed and five others wounded when the vehicle they were travelling in was ambushed in neighbouring Helmand province. Officials say suspected supporters of the former Taleban regime carried out the attacks. (BBC)
