United States forces have announced a new offensive in eastern Afghanistan aimed at al-Qaeda forces. An American military spokesman, Major Richard T Patterson, said the operation codenamed Champion Strike began a few days ago near the town of Shkin, in Paktika Province, close to the border with Pakistan. Major Patterson said US forces had been involved in one skirmish already. There were no casualties; a number of people had been detained and some weapons seized. (BBC)
